Week 1 Introductory lecture to the Community Service Initiative

The first week of the module was an introductory lecture. The module lecturer Ms Sarah briefed us on the requirements of the module, FUGEE school project, group assignment and individual reflection journal. We were introduced to the basics of the community service learning. Service learning is about foster care and concern among the community members, how it develops students’ sense of personal and social responsibility and using the skills and knowledge in real life situations.
There was also briefing on the nature of the project we will be working on throughout the semester 4 which is about the FUGEE school project. FUGEE school project workshops will be running till week 7 and we need to teach FUGEE student how to prepare their own financial statement.

Week 2 Forum Info Sharing

Week 2 was also about getting to know the project in details. We had the founder of FUGEE School, Ms Deborah Henry as our guest speaker and also 3 FUGEE students Ahmed Bashir Mohamed, Nawal Hassan Haile and Ahmed Abdi Dirie. Ms Deborah talked about the kind of work she has devoted herself to as the world is experiencing the worst refugee crisis since WWII. In Malaysia today, there are altogether 100,000 registered refugees from Somalia, Cambodia, Myanmar, Iran and Syria. She shared her experience with us of being a part of FUGEE School the beginning till today, how it established, the mission, vision and values of the FUGEE School. At FUGEE School, her mission is to turn "victims" into "victors". She wants to empower her students to change and be equipped with the skills to transform their lives. The FUGEE students shared their experience, such as one of the students said that the language barrier affected them from interacting with other people as they only knew their own language and no other language (English or Bahasa) and being a part of FUGEE school they learned how to speak English which helped them to interact.

Week 3 FUGEE Students visit Taylor’s

By the third week of this module, about 42 FUGEE students visited Taylor’s for the first time and our FUGEE School project started off with their financial statement. We interacted with the students and made them feel comfortable around us. We were provided with clear instructions regarding our financial statement by Ms Sarah. First, we help the FUGEE student create their own email address for use to complete their “open learning” course. Student mentors were assigned accordingly. We were asked to mentor the FUGEE students in learning the basic of accounting. This week we need to complete the Introduction to Accounting Terms. We also need to explain to the FUGEE student what the video mean and complete the mini quiz and solve the Crossword Puzzle.

Week 4, 5 and 6 Conduct of group projects
In week 4 and 5, we are still assigning to teach the FUGEE’s students about the financial statement. In week 6, we need to help our mentees to prepare the presentation slides .We were asked to identify the learning needs of the FUGEE students and create a financial statement. So, we begin by explaining our mentee about the financial statement that we have to create, what it is about and what are we supposed to do to make the financial statement. How to work with power point, selecting the theme, content and background.

Week 7 Presentation by FUGEE Students

This is the week where finally the FUGEE students present their presentation based on the financial statement. Every group had an amazing mentees. The hard work and dedication of the FUGEE students shows that they have learned a lot during the workshops. All the presentations were prepared with visual aids, details of the statement and the students’ confidence in delivering the message to the audience was outstanding. Ms Deborah Henry and Mr Kneath the principal of FUGEE School were invited to give their feedback to the FUGEE students. The session ended with an award presentation for FUGEE Students. Ms Joyce and Ms Sarah announced the first, second and third place winners of the presentation.


Overall, I would like to share my experience for being a part of the project. It was a great opportunity to be a part of this service learning. We learned how to use the knowledge and skills in our real life. There are always chances to spread positivity among the people, just by contributing a little time and guidance. Lastly, I would say that I have really enjoyed working with the FUGEE students on the FUGEE School project.

Principle Of Management (MGT40203100897)

  

  My name is Yeo Hui Min. I am taking Diploma in Business at Taylor’s University Lakeside. I enjoy studying here because as we all know the education in Taylor’s University is high. I also made many new friends around the world and I think this is one of the benefits for me to expand my business on the future.          This has been a great semester for me because I have learned many new things. Since this is semester 3, I have taking for Principles of Management subject for this challenging semester. In addition, this subject was taught by a very kind hearted and helpful lecturer that is pretty woman when she was smile who is Miss Natasya Saat. They are 2 assignment is individual and group assignment. The individual assignment is about 800 words. My topic of Individual assignment is about the elements of organisational culture. To complete this assignment I need to selected an organization and really understand about the topic relates also put my effort to make it done. Then, for this subject my group and I had to do a very challenging topic  that need us to be very focusing on the topic that was already given to all of us. We all as a one group with four members which is Marilyn, Lee Shi Yaao , Chew Li Li, and me .We are requires to interview a local company’s manager and gather all the information. In there I have to settle all the work based on the part that already given to my group member. Again, my group decided to choose a company that was RT Bakery. For this group assignment we all need to do a very good decoration because we need to do something like a scrap book to present all this to our lecturer. So, as a group member we try our best to do this assignment to get a high marks and can support our coursework marks also. My expectation before doing this assignment was it would be hard but we made it. Again, the problem that I had to face while doing this assignment is we did not know on how to elaborate some points. Luckily, we managed to overcome this problem with the cooperation within the members.
    

   Besides that, for me learning a Principle of Management actually are not easy. We need to really understand about the chapter without memorizing because it will be easier for us to learning it. Finally, after doing this assignment I felt so relieved and the important one is I have learned that in a team we need to put more effort together to make the job easy also with our lecturer support. In other words I really love to learn this subject so much!

English 2 E-Portfolio

   In my group, there are Lee Shi Yaao ,Marilyn Ee , Chan Xin Nie ,Tong Qi Hui , and I. In English 2 group assignment we need to interview an entrepreneur. We have chosen to interview Jack Ma Yun .  He is a person who created Alibaba group.       

   In this group, I have learnt to solve conflicts within our group and manage time properly to ensure our assignment to be completed before the due date set by our lecturer. At first, I was panicking because I did not know how to edit a video. Marilyn helped with the editing.  Lee Shi Yaao , Chan Xin Nie ,Tong Qi Hui , and I will be doing the proposal. I had to give Lee Shi Yaao , Chan Xin Nie ,Tong Qi Hui a due date because we had only two weeks left to complete our assignment.          

  I created a group chat on "Whatsapp" because Marilyn has a different timetable from my timetable and Lee Shi Yaao , Chan Xin Nie ,Tong Qi Hui timetable. Our time was not flexible, so discussing on "Whatsapp" was our form of communication for brainstorming ideas, giving each other relevant information and references. I could also ask them about their progress with the proposal.         

  Three days before the due date, we met up in the library and showed each other what we have done throughout the week. Honestly, I was disappointed because Shi Yaao did not include any references or subheading. I felt that our video was good enough as well.  I think that Marilyn is suitable in editing . In the end, we managed to come into an agreement for our assignment and handed in our assignment into the drop box. I do not regret grouping with Lee Shi Yaao ,Marilyn Ee , Chan xin nie ,Tong Qi Hui because they have showed effort as well.

ENGLISH 1 (ELG40103106743)

On 20th Sept 2014, Taylor university campus held a field trip to visit the DIB Coffees of Hawaii. DIB Coffees  of Hawaii’s Vision is to become the largest employer of deaf people in the world and their mission is to restore hope and dignity to all deaf people by improving their livelihood, through skills training, unbiased employment and deaf business entrepreneurship.

This is a very meaningful trip. This is because all the DIB Coffees of Hawaii’s staff were the deaf people. In this trip I learned a lot of things. The important things that I learned from this trip were the staff of DIB because even they were imperfect, they can also do well in their work and I learned about sign language in this trip. It was interested. I found the information relevant to me that was' we must insist our dream 'like DR. Allen Teh. DR. Allen Teh insist their dream even his family against their dream and even he failed before, but he never gives up. Visited to DIB Coffees of Hawaii will help me in the future because at the DIB Coffee of Hawaii DR. Allen Teh shared their experiences to our Diploma in business's students. He shared how their use their methods to continue their business.

What did I like most about this trip was our Diploma in Business’ members became closer. Although, the Taylor’s bus broke down before we plan to head back to campus, we all still did enjoy the trip. To improve the trip, the university should have a better preparation before organizing trips for students. They should check the engine and have a GPS with them because the bus driver lost his way while we were on the way our destination and the bus broke down after the trip. The other type activities I would like to suggest to Taylor’s are the longer distance trip. For example: Penang, Melaka and so on.

The first is my thinking and problem solving skills which was tied in with the TGC outlined had also been enriched. I have learnt to ‘think out of the box’ through this trip as the task which are stated in the project required creative and critical thinking. Due to such task, it had given me the opportunity to brainstorm with my teammates to allow more ideas to be converged. Teamwork affords us the opportunity to challenge ideas and arrive to a compromise solution that contributes to the successful completion of the task.

The second is TGC that I can relate on is the Communication Skill, which I am able to communicate with people around me in a different way. Identify and change the styles of communicating with different people is an important ability for a business student. For example, I will talk politely whenever I talk to my lecture or tuitorial, I can communicate to the people who are older or younger than me.

The third is Interpersonal Skill allows me to understand to work with others and the team dynamics of my group. Each and every member of my group is able to work well and communicate within each other. This ability enables us to work as a team and build friendship among each other more than before. Due to the time we gather at school, we discuss and complete our assignment before the deadline and prevent most of the mistake we might have miss out.

Principle Of Accounting (ACC40104T0109)

Principle of accounting was one of the easiest subject to me compare to other business subjects for semester 1 because I learned it in my secondary school before.In the Principle Of Accounting course,I learned about the basic of accounting principles and concepts.Since I learned the Principle Of Accounting,I know how to manage the bookkeeping of business and the preparation of financial statement. In addition to that,I also learned the exposure to further knowledge on asset and analysis of the financial report.


The topics I learned in this course were introduction to accounting, recording transaction(part 1/part 2/part 3),Adjustment(part 1/part 2),financial statements,analysis and interpretation of financial statement,accounting for inventory,Bank reconciliation statement,incomplete record.My favorite topics for this subject was the first chapter.It allows me understand the importance of accounting. Through those chapters, I learned that accounting was the Language of Business.It can help people or the stakeholders of business communicate and understand the business.Other than that,accounting also known as the information system and bookkeeping,it recorded all the business transaction of a firm. This record information can help the business when making the decisions.In this course i also have the individual assignment and group assignment.I learned a lot in this two assignment.In the individual assignment, I referred to the DIGI BHD annual report to write the three accounting concept and two qualitative characteristic.In group assignment,I had three group members. My group members are Chan Tian Xiang,Marilyn and Eugene. For the group assignment, what we have to do was to compare two companies' Annual Report 2013. The two companies was Cycle & Carriage Bintang Berhad and Tan Chong Motor Holdings Berhad. I looked up for the report and information from the Bursa Malaysia website. 


Lastly,the practice and tutorial work in class is the most helpful to me.It helped me how to solve the questions and remember the accounting formulas and steps.
